We’ve all been there. You reach for that casserole dish at the back of the oven, only to notice a wall of grease and grime buildup. You resign yourself to spending the next afternoon scrubbing away with baking soda, vinegar, and a lot of elbow grease. But let’s face it: DIY oven cleaning hacks can be a real chore, and often, the results are less than stellar.

As professionals with years of experience in oven cleaning in London, we’ve seen it all—burnt-on spills, stubborn caked-on grease, and ovens that haven’t been properly cleaned in years. While we appreciate the desire to save money or to conquer the task, the truth is that DIY oven cleaning methods often fail to deliver a truly extensive cleaning.

In this blog post, we’ll be sharing some of the reasons why DIY oven cleaning hacks might not be as effective as you think and what you can do instead to achieve a sparkling oven that you’ll be proud of.

Some DIY oven cleaning hacks involve abrasive products that can scratch the appliance’s surface.

The Trouble with DIY Oven Cleaning Hacks

There are many reasons why DIY oven cleaning methods can fall short. Here are a few of the most common:

Ineffective cleaning power: Many DIY recipes rely on common household ingredients like lemon juice, vinegar and baking soda. While these ingredients are safe and non-toxic, they don’t have the grease-cutting power to tackle baked-on grime, burnt sugar, and stubborn food stains.

Abrasive ingredients: Some DIY methods recommend using abrasive materials like baking soda or salt to scrub the oven. While these can be effective on light grime, they can also scratch the surface of your appliance, making it more susceptible to staining and more challenging to clean in the future.

Time-consuming: First, scouring your oven for hours on end is no one’s idea of fun. Second, many DIY hacks require extensive scrubbing and soaking, which can be a chore, especially on a heavily soiled oven.

Safety concerns: The improper use of certain household products can be dangerous. A common mistake to avoid is combining bleach and ammonia, which can produce toxic gases.

Incomplete cleaning: DIY methods can work well on the surface of the oven; however, they often leave grease and grime behind in the nooks and crannies, like in between the oven door glass or the racks and their rails and other awkward and hard-to-see places.

Sometimes only strong cleaning products can change the grime sight of your heavily soiled oven.

DIY Oven Cleaning with High-Quality Products

We understand that not everyone may be ready to call in a professional cleaning service. If you’re looking to tackle oven cleaning yourself, there are ways to do so effectively. Still, ditching the baking soda and vinegar routine for heavily soiled ovens is crucial to the outcome. Here’s what you can do:

  • Invest in high-quality commercial cleaners: Skip the supermarket cleaning aisle, head to a professional cleaning supply store, or look up specialised sites online. You’ll find high-quality commercial-grade oven cleaners formulated to tackle tough baked-on grease and grime. These cleaners are more potent than household products and cut through grime faster.
  • Safety first: Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully when using any cleaning product. Wear thick gloves and eye protection, and ensure proper ventilation when using harsh chemicals.
  • Prepare the oven: The prep work is just as important as the cleaning itself. If you’ve used the appliance before the cleaning, allow it to cool completely. Remove oven racks and detachable components (like drip pans) and soak them in a hot, soapy water bath with a degreaser added. Cover the surrounding surfaces with old towels to protect them from splatters.
  • Apply the cleaner: Following the product instructions, spread generous amounts to the oven interior, avoiding heating elements and the fan. Many commercial cleaners have a foamy consistency that clings to surfaces, ensuring maximum contact time.
  • Let it work: Allow the cleaner to sit for the recommended amount of time, which can range from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the product. This time allows the cleaner to break down tough grease and grime.
  • Scrub and rinse: Once the dwell time is complete, put on thick gloves and use a non-abrasive scouring pad or sponge to scrub the loosened grime. Pay particular attention to greasy areas and burnt-on food stains. Rinse the oven interior thoroughly with clean water, ensuring that all traces of cleaner are removed. Repeat this step if necessary.
  • Dry completely: Once you rinse the appliance, use clean cloths or towels to dry the oven interior completely. Leaving any moisture behind can promote mould growth.

While high-quality commercial products can be effective on moderately soiled ovens, you can still encounter some limitations to DIY oven cleaning:

  • Time commitment: Oven cleaning, even with good products, can be a dull and lengthy task, especially when dealing with old stubborn stains and dirt.
  • Safety hazards: Commercial oven cleaners are powerful and can irritate the skin and eyes if not appropriately handled.
  • Stubborn stains: Even commercial-grade cleaners may struggle with heavily soiled ovens with baked-on grease or burnt-on food.

There is nothing worse than getting blood on clothes, upholstered furniture, or even the carpet. Why? Because blood is one of the most stubborn stains to tackle. This is because there are so many myths on how to deal with stains. If armed with the correct knowledge and methodology, dealing with bloodstains can be a walk in the park. That is why our team of stain removal specialists have decided to help us put together this guide on how to clean bloodstains from upholstery.

how to clean bloodstains from upholstered furniture

Upholstery Types

Before we get to the method, it is important to take a look at the type of upholstery you will be treating. The reason for this is that each type of fabric requires different approaches and you do not want to be damaging your beautiful furniture.

  • Nylon – easy to clean, durable, high abrasion resistance;
  • Polyester – easy to clean, durable, low to moderate abrasion resistance;
  • Olefin – easy to clean, very durable, colourfast;
  • Acrylic – easy to clean, very durable, colourfast;
  • Rayon – low-moisture cleaning, not very durable;
  • Cotton – tricky to clean, not fade-resistant;
  • Wool – difficult to clean, not very stain-resistant;
  • Leather – easy to clean; the good thing with leather is that in most cases, you can just wipe off the stain if it has not yet dried.

Always check the label on your furniture and pay attention to the instructions. This is vital to maintaining your home interior in tip-top condition. If you have a dried bloodstain, we recommend you contact professional stain-removal technicians to give you a hand. This could help you save doing irreversible damage to your upholstery.

How to Clean Bloodstains from Upholstery

Now that you know the main qualities of the fabrics, it is time to get to the main part – how to clean bloodstains from upholstery. Here is our extensive guide, provided by vetted technicians:

  1. If the bloodstain has dried before you noticed it, it may be a good idea to get an old toothbrush. Gently brush away the dried residue without applying much pressure. You don’t want to rub it into the fabric.
  2. Now, if possible, remove the cover of your upholstered furniture. If not, you will have to be very careful with the next step not to cause damage.
  3. Rinse the area with cold water to get as much of the stain out as possible. Blood is a protein stain, so be sure to use cold water only.
  4. In the event that the previous step was not possible due to moisture-sensitive fabric, get an absorbent sponge or cloth. Plunge them in cold water and start blotting the area to lift as much of the stain as you can.
  5. Now get a bit of soda water and a cup of cold water and mix the two together. Get a clean sponge or cloth and continue blotting at the area.
  6. Repeat step 5 until it stops lifting the stain. By this point, there should only be a light residue of the blood.
  7. Mix 8 parts water with 1 part glycerine and 1 part laundry detergent with just a drop of fairy washing up liquid into a spray bottle and shake it well.
  8. Spray lightly, about 2 or 3 times onto the afflicted area.
  9. Rinse out your cloth or sponge and continue dabbing at the area using circular motions. If needed, repeat the step a few times.
  10. Once there are no traces of the stain left, get a bowl of clean, cold water and rinse out the area using a clean towel or cloth.

One of the important things in life is sleep. We, as a race, spend an average of one-third of our lives in our beds. Considering that large fraction, we don’t spend that much time investing in the maintenance of our bed palaces. While we are in our beds, our bodies produce more bodily odours, such as sweat, drool, and other bodily fluids are constantly seeping into your bedding.

It is of the utmost importance to know how to maintain your mattress odour-free. This is because poor hygiene in your bed can cause problems while sleeping, leaving you unhappy, tired, and unrested. In our guide on mattress maintenance, we have included general tasks to add to your cleaning routine as well as a few tricks for “freshening up” your sleeping den.

Tasks to Add to your General Cleaning Routine

You may be wondering why you would want to add MORE boring chores to your cleaning list. Our team of professional mattress cleaners point out regularly that, in the long run, adding a few 10-minute tasks to your routine can save you time, money, and sleep. If you neglect your mattress, with time lots of dust and bodily odours accumulate that attract mites. Not only that, but poor hygiene can seriously deduct from your sleep.

  1. Now this one may seem a bit obvious, but changing your bedclothes regularly is vital when it comes to a good night’s sleep. At least once or twice a week is recommended.
  2. Vacuum your mattress once monthly. We shed lots of dead skin cells when sleeping and dust accumulates quite fast under those sheets.
  3. Flip your mattress once every 6 months. This will help avoid one-sided deterioration and will keep your mattress fresh for longer.

How to Maintain your Mattress Odour-Free

Our professional cleaners have put together a quick guide on how to maintain your mattress odour-free. This short routine, if conducted once monthly, will help keep your bed fresh and your nights peaceful.

Here is a list of things you should prepare:

  • Vacuum;
  • Bicarbonate of soda (100g) and cornstarch (100g);
  • Essential oils (optional).

Now that you have gathered your tackle for mattress maintenance, let us get to work:

  1. The first step is to strip your bedclothes and hoover the top-side of the mattress (you can worry about the bottom side when you next flip it).
  2. Now, you will want to get your soda bicarb and cornstarch and mix them together.
  3. Sprinkle your dry component all over the surface of your mattress and leave it to sit for a good hour. If your bed has an odour issue, you may want to consider leaving it for a few hours.
  4. Hoover time. Make sure you suck up all the little particles. The soda bicarb and cornstarch work as a dry compound that, due to their small size, can get between the fibres of your mattress. They then absorb a lot of odours and bacteria. That is how it helps improve your mattress hygiene.
  5. Now you can sprinkle 20-30 drops of your favourite essential oils. Lavender is a great option for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Now that you are equipped appropriately for the job, let us get to the work. Here is our guide on how to care for wool carpets and rugs:

  1. First off, take your floor covering outside, if possible, and give it a good shaking to get rid of any loose dirt in the fibres. If not, try hanging it over a railing or something and giving it a good whack with a flat head sweeping brush.
  2. Now, give the carpet a once over with a vacuum to get rid of dust buried into the fibres.
  3. Next up, get your bucket and fill it with cool water. Then add a capful of your gentle laundry detergent and mix it into the water.
  4. Time to sponge. Get your sponge and dip it into the water. There is no need to go overboard with the moisture, so use enough, but do not soak the rug. Start working it from the corners inwards with your sponge and soapy water.
  5. Now, rinse out your bucket and fill it with clean water. Use this to rinse out the soapy water from your carpet.
  6. Finally, get your dry towels to soak up as much of the moisture as possible. Then leave your carpet in a spot to dry. Preferably not under direct sunlight, as it may fade the colours.

Professional Pointers on General Wool Carpet and Rug Care

  • Pet hair stuck inbetween the wool fibresa cn be removed using a hard brush. Always brush in the direction of the nap of the carpet.

  • Hoover the underside once every one or two months.
  • Using snow to clean your wool is an ancient technique that many people still like to apply. It is supposed to freeze and kill bacteria in the process.

Ah, the humble lavatory. The place where we go to relieve ourselves, not only from the usual bodily needs, but from the stress of a long day. Our trusty friend and companion, the loo, is a wonderful refuge from our day-to-day life. That’s why we need to take care of it. Limescale is a devilish little thing that lurks in the water. It loves to grip onto our lovely white toilet bowl, which in time, leads to an unseemly discolouration of the porcelain. That’s why we’ve decided to put together a guide of the do’s and dont’s on how to remove limescale from your toilet.

Check out also: End of Tenancy Cleaning London Prices.

What is Limescale?

First things first, before you tackle the beast, you need to know what it is. Limescale is a sneaky little thing. It’s a hard, chalky deposit, made up of mainly calcium carbonate (CaCO3). It often tends to build up in kettles, hot water boilers, and pipework, especially for hot water. Limescale builds up in places where “hard water” evaporates. After which, limescale usually turns a funny colour. The colours can vary from off-white through to a range of greys and pink or reddish browns. In addition to being hard to clean and not so pleasing to the eye, it can cause serious damage to plumbing and heating components.

How NOT to Remove Limescale

As always with cleaning methods, there are many cleaning myths out there. That’s why we have tried and tested those methods and we’re here to give you the results. Here are the two most popular limescale removal myths we’ve discovered:

  1. Bleach – Common bleach is one of the best friends of the household. It can remove tough stains, brighten darkened surfaces, disinfect, and it kills basically everything. So it would be understandable as to why so many people think it works. The truth is that it doesn’t actually remove the limescale. It just brightens the discolouration. In this case, it makes the limescale more destructive, as you can’t see it and aren’t aware of the damage it’s doing.
  2. Coca-Cola – According to this myth, pouring a bottle of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and leaving overnight will destroy the limescale. The idea is that the acid in the cola will get rid of the limescale. Our results on this test weren’t great. All we got was a cola-coloured limescale stain.

How to Remove Limescale From Your Toilet?

Ok, so now we’ve cleared up those little myths, we’ll tell you a few DIY ways of de-scaling your toilet. You will need:

That’s it! Here are our two methods from limescale removal:

How to Remove Limescale with Vinegar:

  1. Get 1 litre of undiluted white vinegar and pour it into the bowl. Make sure you get all sides of the toilet bowl.
  2. Now, it’s waiting time. Give it at least 3 hours to sit.
  3. Using a toilet brush or a scrubbing sponge with more white vinegar, scrub ot the toilet bowl.
  4. Flush to remove all residue.
  5. Repeat until your toilet is sparkling like new!

How to Remove Limescale with Sandpaper:

We recommend using 2 types of sandpaper for this job – medium-grain and fine-grain

  1. Scrub the inside of the toilet starting with the medium-grain sandpaper.
  2. Carry on until the majority of the limescale is gone and don’t apply to much pressure so as not to scratch the bowl.
  3. Using the fine-grain start to buff the inside of the toilet until the stain is completely gone.
  4. Flush the loo to get rid of any residue and clean the toilet as you usually would.

Steam kills various fungi and bacteria lurking between the rug’s fibres.

Solution for Steam Cleaner

Using a steam cleaner to refresh your rugs is one of the best ways to kill fungi and bacteria settled deep into the threads and fibres. And the best thing about using steam is that you don’t have to use toxic chemicals – the high temperature eliminates all microbes!

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp dishwashing liquid
  • ½ cup hydrogen peroxide
  • ½ cup white distilled vinegar
  • 5-6 drops of your favourite essential oil (optional)

Instructions:

Put all ingredients in a plastic bowl and stir well until you get a smooth and homogenous mixture. The essential oil is optional, but it gives a pleasant odour to your cleaner. Pour the mixture inside the container of your steam cleaner and fill water to the top. Shake the tank well to dilute the cleaning mixture in the water. Turn on the steam and run it over the rug. After you cover the whole surface, dispose of the liquid from the container, rinse it, fill it with clean water and then rerun it to ‘wash’ the residues of the solution.

This rug freshener will remove even old odours leaving your rug smelling and looking great!

Rug Freshener

This is such a great, easy to prepare freshener! This formula will help you get rid of foul odours coming from your rug fast and safely. You can apply it to remove pet odours, cigarette scent and smells from cooking. Use this freshener as often as you want because it is very gentle to the rug’s fibres.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup borax
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 7-8 drops essential oil (optional)

Instructions:

Put the two dry ingredients in a bowl and mix them properly. Add a few drops of essential oil and stir well. Distribute the compound evenly directly onto the rug. Spread the mixture evenly onto the whole surface using a soft brush. Let it sit for half an hour. The dry ingredients are the key to the efficacy of the recipe. Both baking soda and borax absorb strong odours quickly, without leaving a trace. The scented oil is optional. However, it will give a pleasant gentle fragrance into the room. Vacuum the carpet thoroughly to extract the compound in full.

Dull colours are no reason to throw away your rug. You can easily make the carpet bright again with the recipe below.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp distilled white vinegar
  • ½ tsp ammonia
  • 4 tbsp dishwashing liquid
  • 2 cups lukewarm water

Instructions:

Put all the ingredients in a food processor and blend until you have a nice thick foam. If you don’t have a food processor, you can use an egg whisk or simply get a foam dispenser bottle. Distribute the foam evenly onto the rug without pressing or rubbing hard. Let the foam sit for 10 minutes. After this, remove the foam from the carpet using a spatula. Get a clean sponge, dip it in water, and squeeze it until almost dry. Blot the rug to rinse it from any excess residues from your cleaner. The carpet will be slightly damp after you finish, and it will dry quickly, especially if you leave a window open. Vacuum the rug after it has dried.

If you need to deal with old stubborn stains on your rug, or if it is water sensitive, homemade formulas might not be the best option. Call us, and we will provide an excellent rug cleaning service and stain removal job at a competitive price.

You can prolong the life of your epilator if you clean it regularly using rubbing alcohol.

Clean Electric Shavers and Epilator Heads with Rubbing Alcohol

If you have the feeling that you razor’s blades have lost their sharpness or that your epilator just doesn’t work as well as before, don’t rush to the store to get a new one. Over time, a thin coat of skin cells and oils covers the epilator’s tweezers or the shaver’s blades and prevents them from working properly. You can easily sanitize the device and make it work as new. Soak the epilator or shaver’s head in pure rubbing alcohol. After 20 minutes scrub the area with a soft brush. Rinse with rubbing alcohol, to remove the residues. Let the gadget dry completely before using it. The alcohol will dissolve the dirt fast, without damaging the device. You can use this trick for cleaning hair clippers as well.

Remove Grease a Stain With Salt

Getting a grease stain on your clothes when you aren’t home doesn’t mean you need to put up with the unsightly spot during the whole day. Dampen the spot with little water (don’t over-soak it) and pour table salt generously over the area without pressing or rubbing.
