Having guests over is a great delight. We all love to crack out a nice old bottle of red wine at dinner parties. However, sometimes things can go wrong. Whether that be because there’s a clumsy adult at the table, children running around the place, or pets jumping up at the guests. We all know it’s bad when you end up with a massive patch of red wine on the carpet. Worry not, though. With our easy-to-follow guide on red wine stain removal, you will have that stain out in no time. Below, you will find 3 methods to attempt the stain removal process. You could also apply these methods to certain types of upholstery.

1. Red Wine Stain Removal Using Stain Remover

Most people will have a standard stain-removal product at home. Follow our instructions on how to correctly commence the red wine stain removal process:

  1. First off, get some paper towels. Blot up as much of the excess liquid as possible. Don’t scrub it, you don’t want to end up making it worse.
  2. Now get a bowl of cold water and a clean cloth. Gently dab up as much of you can without spreading it. Also, be mindful of the type of carpet, you don’t want to end up damaging it with too much moisture. Natural fibre carpets, such as wool rugs, might not deal so well with the moisture.
  3. Time to break out your stain-removal product. Closely follow the instructions on the label. You may have to repeat this a few times as red wine can be stubborn. However, if this didn’t work, don’t persist. Try contacting professional carpet cleaners to consult them on how best to proceed.
  4. When the carpet has dried, give it a once over with the vacuum to make sure it doesn’t get soiled.

2. Red Wine Stain Removal Using White Wine and Soda Bicarb

In case you don’t have any stain-removal products at home, you can try out this method. All you need is white wine and baking soda to use for red wine stain removal.

  1. If you have a dry white wine (never use sweet wine for this), pour a bit over the stain. This will help dilute the red wine. If you have vodka lying around, that would also do the trick.
  2. Now blot up as much of the liquid as possible. Use either a sponge and bucket or paper towels.
  3. Pour a liberal amount of baking soda over the stain and leave it overnight to absorb.
  4. Now vacuum up the soda bicarb and you should be good. If this didn’t work, try out the next method.

3. How to Get Red Wine Stains Out of Carpets Using Dish Soap and Hydrogen Peroxide

Before you start on this one for red wine stain removal, we would like to give a warning. Hydrogen peroxide can work as a bleaching agent. If your carpet is bright and colourful, we advise against using it. It would be better to call a professional cleaning company to deal with the issue at this point.

  1. Blot up as much of the dampness as possible using paper towels (if the stain is still fresh). Clean white cloths will also do.
  2. Now get some cold water and a cloth. Continue blotting until no more wine transfers to the cloth. Be careful not to rub, you don’t want to make it worse.
  3. Squirt a little bit of dish soap on the stain together with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide. We recommend 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts water.
  4. Now get a clean cloth and keep blotting away until there is no more transfer.
  5. If there are still traces of the stain after this, get some soapy water and keep blotting away until you can’t lift anymore.
  6. Now rinse the area with cold water.
  7. Leave to dry and vacuum.
