This spring KTMA Ltd. team prepared detailed guides on green cleaning different areas of the house. We’ve started with general tips for easy and efficient cleaning  from our pros, after that we’ve posted wonderful list of DIY recipes for kitchen cleaners and last week’s post was all about eco-friendly living room spring cleaning.

People tend to forget that the bedroom is actually the area you spend the most of your time at home. It is essential to avoid using toxic chemicals when cleaning. This is why today we’ve written a few great environmentally friendly and healthy tips on cleaning your bedroom after the cold season.

General Bedroom Cleanup

Before you start the task of cleaning you will need to declutter and organise the place. Spring Cleaning is the best opportunity to clean your wardrobe and get rid of all the clothes you don’t need. If they are in good condition you can donate them, if not – just cut them and reuse the pieces for cleaning cloths. Put away all thick blankets and winter clothes to make more space.

Generally, the lesser things in your bedroom, the more serene and relaxing it will be. Get all dirty clothes to your laundry basket and put away all the things that don’t belong to this room. Run the vacuum cleaner and dust all surfaces – nightstands, shelves and dressing table. You can make all-purpose cleaner by yourself (we’ve posted the recipe in our previous article), or you can just use water and microfibre cloth.

Clean Bedroom Curtains, Carpets and Windows

To make the windows, mirrors and other glass surfaces in your sleeping area clean and shiny just mix 1 part white vinegar and 1 part of warm water into a spray bottle and use instead of commercial glass cleaning product. Another solution is to use rubbing alcohol to remove stubborn stains and grease spots from windows and other glass surfaces. Green Cleaning Your Linens

Changing your linens regularly guarantees you will enjoy a good night sleep. But it is also important how you launder them and what kind of detergent you are using. Here is a simple recipe for green homemade laundry detergent that works great for both hand and machine washing.

Ingredients for DIY green laundry detergent:

  • 1 bar of soap
  • 1 cup of borax
  • 1 cup of washing soda

Grind the soap using your cheese grinder and mix it with the other ingredients. If you want to use this laundry powder with cold water – process it in your food blender – the result will be fine powdered natural detergent. Keep in glass jar. Use 1 tbsp for load. If your linens are heavily soiled you can add 2-3 tbsp of the mixture. You can also check our organic recipe for soapnut laundry detergent.

If you want to replace the commercial fabric softener in your washing machine, just pour ½ cup of white distilled vinegar and 4-5 drops of essential oil to the fabric softener dispenser. The vinegar will soften the load and it will remove the soap residues from the washing machine.

CLEAN YOUR MATTRESS

Before you put clean fresh sheets on your bed it is good to clean your mattress. Vacuum thoroughly the surface. Many mattresses nowadays have two sides – if you happen to have one of those get advantage of that – now is the time to flip it. Some models even have “winter” and “summer” side finished with different fabrics. If you need to deep clean your mattress check our complete guide here.

CLEAN THE AIR IN YOUR BEDROOM

During winter we don’t open the windows that much and rely on air fresheners and air conditioning systems to keep the air in the bedroom clean. Take advantage of warmer spring days and open the windows as often as you can. Replace the toxic commercial air freshenerwith essential oil diffuser if you want to add some nice aroma in your sleeping area – lavender is great if you want to relax and sleep better, while grapefruit oil will boost your energy at the start of the day.
