Light Switches and Doorknobs

You, your family or roommates touch them every day, every guest touches them at least a few times while at your home. Yet, most people sanitise the doorknobs and light switches only during spring cleanings of the house. To avoid spreading bacteria, wipe the doorknobs as often as possible. You can prepare your own sanitizer by diluting some tea tree oil in a rubbing alcohol. Tea tree oil has been known for its natural disinfecting properties and is a key ingredient in many recipes for homemade cleaners.

Handles and Knobs in Your Kitchen

The kitchen is as susceptible to bacteria as is your bathroom. When preparing food we handle various products and we often reach for the kitchen drawer to take out the knife we need, or the to the cupboard to get some spice. And, let’s admit it – although we wipe the counters and clean the sink after every cooking, most of us never remember to sanitise all the handles we have touched. Create a habit to wipe carefully all the handles and knobs around the food preparation area after every meal, to avoid spreading of bacteria. In general, it’s a good rule of thumb to clean everything you touch regularly in the kitchen at least once a week.

The Coffee Maker

This is another kitchen item most people use every day, but regularly forget to clean. Sure, we do fill in the water reservoir – because we simply cannot prepare the coffee without that key ingredient. But, as with everything appliance that uses water, your coffee maker’s reservoir is prone to mould growth. So, don’t forget to include this item in your weekly cleaning list. To avoid mould and bacteria in the reservoir it is enough to clean it with dishwashing liquid and rinse it with a solution of 1 part water and 1 part white vinegar.

The Kitchen Sponge

Speaking of mould and bacteria, how often do you change your kitchen sponge? According to Business Insider, “the things you use to wash your dishes are the dirtiest objects in your home”. Gross! The researchers shared that “kitchen sponges harbour higher bacterial diversity than previously thought.” Rinsing the sponge after every use is a must, but although it will clean some of the food residues it won’t kill bacteria. Scientists agree, that boiling your kitchen sponge or microwaving it after every use will reduce the bacteria. However, the safest solution is to change sponges 1 a week.
